“I have no idea if I can do this. I’m 43 years old. I probably should have started 20 years ago. Awww, shut up! You know better than to think like that! This could be a blast!”

That’s me talking to myself the day before I reached out to my old high school buddy and well-known writer Michael Thompson about a year and a half ago. I wanted to tell him I loved what he’s been doing with writing — and I wanted to try it.

I knew Mike would be receptive to me reaching out as we’re old friends, but about my foray into doing what he did, I wasn’t sure. Who was I to just waltz into his world and assume I could find some footing there? I didn’t know.

“Ya man, that’s great! Send me a draft and we can look over it,” he said.

The first draft I sent him could be described as poor speckled with average — but he didn’t tell me that. Instead, he said something like “wow, you have some great stuff in here. Call me and we can talk about how to get it ready to publish.”

And that’s where it started. I found another new love in writing in my mid-40’s. I’ve written 141 articles since that day and I’m making enough money with it now to invest in a few new interests. Plus I’m just…
