One of the greatest leaders I ever served under was former Secretary of Defense and Marine General James “Mad Dog” Mattis. Among hundreds of quotable quotes he’s quipped, he said this about leadership:

“When it’s all over and done with you’re not going to win any fights as a leader. Your troops are going to win those fights.”

Leadership isn’t as much about how good you are as it is about how good you make others want to be. This same mentality translates perfectly to modern business practices. Perhaps reworded as:

“When the doors close at the end of the day, you’re not going to win any customers or sales or a better company reputation as a boss, your people are going to do that.”

So your function as a leader is to empower people to be their best. To bring others to their potential, you must be approaching yours.

Your job as a leader is to be the vehicle that brings your team to their potential. This mentality of being a vehicle for the betterment of those you lead is one key to being an effective leader.
